Mark remained Bishop of Byzantium for 13 years during the period of the persecution of Christians by the emperor Septimus Seberus. It is questionable whether he during this whole period, he was himself in charge of the bishopric, or if, due to the persecution, some priest was in charge for the bishopric for a period of 8 years.
