Visit of U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary Jonathan R. Cohen to the Ecumenical Patriarchate

His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew received the Honorable Jonathan R. Cohen, U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs, together with members of the U.S. Consulate General in Istanbul, during their visit to the Phanar on Thursday, October 19, 2017.
During their hour-long meeting, discussions included matters of interest to the Ecumenical Patriarchate and its community in Turkey, as well as the reopening of the Theological School of Halki, which has remained closed since 1971. Mr. Cohen visited the historic school on Friday, October 20, 2017.
Further discussion ensued regarding the initiatives of the Ecumenical Throne on increasing awareness and sensitivity for the preservation and protection of the natural environment, as well as Inter-Religious dialogues which aim to advance peaceful coexistence and reconciliation among peoples and cultures. With this last topic in mind, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew informed Mr. Cohen of his upcoming visit to Athens in order to attend a conference organized by Greece’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nikos Kotzias.
