His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew sent a message of compassion and support to the local Church and the people of Zakynthos, who are plagued by the disastrous wildfires on their island.

In his letter to the Metropolitan of Zakynthos Dionysios, His All-Holiness characteristically also notes that, “we entreat the God of mercy and solace to immediately end this trial, and for no loss of human life to take place. Furthermore, we beseech Him to grant you strength from above for the preservation of a high morale, and to provide you with support from the Church, the City, the Municipality, and of all those who are capable in providing assistance for the restoration of damages.”

Three days ago, the Ecumenical Patriarch visited Zakynthos, where he presided over the events honoring the 300-year anniversary of the translation of the holy relic of St. Dionysios.

The full text of His All-Holiness’ letter to the Metropolitan of Zakynthos Dionysios follows:

To the Venerable Metropolitan of Zakynthos Dionysios
In Zakynthos.

Having joyously returned to our historic center following our holy pilgrimage to St. Dionysios, the protector of your God-saved Eparchy, we and our honorable delegation would like to congratulate you for the organization of these celebrations, and wholeheartedly thank you for your invitation, reception, honors, accommodations, and for granting us the Saint’s blessing.

Today, Venerable brother, we return in a noetic way to our beloved Zakynthos in order to express the compassion and support of the Ecumenical Patriarchate to you and the devout plenitude of your Metropolis concerning the disastrous wildfires which recently plague your island.

We entreat the God of mercy and solace to immediately end this trial, and for no loss of human life to take place. Furthermore, we beseech Him to grant you strength from above for the preservation of a high morale, and to provide you with support from the Church, the City, the Municipality, and of all those who are capable in providing assistance for the restoration of damages.

May God be with you and all of hospitable Zakynthos.

At the Phanar, August, 26 2017.

Your beloved brother in Christ
and fervent supplicant before God,
